On Saturday, August 23, from 10-11 AM, Joshua Klein, author of Hands Employed Aright: The Furniture Making of Jonathan Fisher (1768-1847), will be at the Jonathan Fisher House demonstrating grain painting techniques based on his research into the painted finishes Fisher applied to his furniture.
At times, painted decoration was aimed at simulating expensive cabinetmaking woods, but other times, these artists embraced fanciful and whimsical decorative effects that no lumber could match. Jonathan Fisher used these techniques in his own furniture making, examples of which can be seen at the historic house museum. Come and join Joshua as he walks through the grain-painting process. And if you wear clothing you don’t mind getting messy, you too can try your hand at the process!
This event is free and open to the public, though donations are welcome. No reservations are required to attend. This program will be held outdoors. In the event of rainy weather, it will be moved into the barn, which has limited indoor space, and waterproof footwear would be recommended to access.
