DANIEL SPOFFORD HOUSE, Main Street, c. 1800

Daniel Spofford House, circa 1910 view

Daniel Spofford was a carpenter and millwright, who also owned an interest in a potash works on the town landing and who helped Jonathan Fisher in his own building projects. Although it is known that Spofford had a house in this area as early as 1794, it is believed not to be this house, to which a date of 1800 is generally ascribed.

Stylistically, the Spofford house is the house in Blue Hill with exterior design features most in common with the Jonathan Fisher House, both being square three bay wide hip roof houses, with projecting entry vestibules. Like the Fisher House, it is set much further back from the road than was usual with Blue Hill houses. The attractive projecting vestibule, which originally had a pilastered doorway, is probably an early addition, probably by Jeremiah and Jonah Holt, who bought the house from Spofford in 1810, and who also added the story and a half ell to the right of the entrance.
