Bluehill - March 1797

1. Went with Mrs. F. upon Bluehill Neck and married J. ? to T. Trusel.

2. Went to Newberry Neck, 15 miles, and married Ruf. Paten to Hannah ? .

6.- 9. Made a ? . Wrote letter to westward to one of my friends and a classmate. Began a family register for the town. Painted a table and a box. Cut cord wood and spruce logs.

17.-18. Made a box and inserted in it the order in which were written the texts of all my sermons. (This practice I have still continued. Find the table of texts very convenient and now recommend the practice to other preachers.) Wrote sermons.

19. Preached at B. Read in Maro ? of ? divinity.

20.-23. Went to Sedgwick and Deer Isle. Agreed upon a day of prayer and fasting for the outpouring of the divine spirit the first at Deer Isle the first Wednesday in May. Returned to B. Read in William’s History of Vermont.

26. Preached at B. Read in Maro ? of divinity.

27.-31. Walked two miles. Began to ? a philosophic alphabet. Cut spruce logs and cedar poles. Married Jim Osgood and Judith Andrews. Walked to the upper part of the town. Spent one night. Made several visits and returned. Measured about five acres of land for the town to clear for me. Staked out a part of my barn. Took from Penobscot Indians a ? of their language.

Bluehill - April 1797

2. Preached at B. Read in Maro ? of Divinity. Returned and settled with a number of persons. Cleared ground for potatoes. Rec 'd a visit. Made two visits. Rec'd letter from Sister Battle.

Bluehill - May 1797

1. Looked over my land with Mr. H. and on the plan set off about 100 acres for ? for a farm. Mr. H. and persons dug and hauled stone for me and worked at stoning cellar. Walked myself to Union (?) River, preached there. Tarried two nights and returned.

8.-13. Surveyed land for Mr. H. Planned a bridge for ? Falls. Attended town meeting. Rec'd company. Exercised several days with painful soreness in my throat. Wrote part of a sermon.

14. Prevented preaching by soreness of my throat. Examined Paines ? to the Bible, the works and nature. Read Wakefield's reply; value it but very little.

15.-18. Mr. H. having engaged with me for $12. a month worked at helping. Worked some with him and some on my house.

19.-20. Wrote sermon.

21. Preached at Bluehill.

22.-25.Worked at taking down chimney, plowing and fencing potato ground, etc. Mr. H. worked with me.

Bluehill - June 1797

1.- 3. Finished fence. Wrote sermon. Mr. H. planted potatoes.

4. Preached at B. Began to translate a little in Hebrew to ? Morris by Mr. Davenport.

5.-10. Proceeded with taking down chimney. Gave Mr. H. a deed of 107 acres of land for $107. Deducted $24. For 2 months of his labor and took of him a note for $83. Planted potatoes. Preached lecture and wrote sermon for the Sabbath.

11. Preached at Bluehill. Finished reading in Addison's ? .

12.-17. Spent most of the week planting potatoes other ? . Had my barn raised. Mr. Eaton of Harpswell called on us. Began to rebuild my church. Went to Sedgwick.

19.-24. Returned home, made a visit. Dry clay and sand cleaned brick. Worked on stone for church. Mr. H. peeled bark for me. Wrote sermon.

Bluehill - July 1797

1. Wrote sermon. Had 3 loads of bark carried to the ? .

2. Preached at Bluehill.

3.-8. Worked with Mr. R. Wood and others rebuilding chimney and joined the lower part to the upper. ? would save a chamber floor by bracing it up. Mr. H. finished peeling bark. Mr. Johnson hauled it. Wrote sermon.

9. Preached at Bluehill. Read ? Began to translate from the French some of Pascal's Thoughts.

10.-15. Worked on a wheelbarrow. Made two visits. Helped raise Capt. Horton's barn. Wrote sermon. Received of ? $59. Mr. H. cut fencing stuff, dug a drain and hoed potatoes.

17.-22. Made a ladder, worked some on my house. Made two visits. Wrote three sermons and an admonition. Preached a lecture.

24.-29. Worked at making fence, cleaning cellar, mowing and tending hay, Mr. H. with me. Went on errands. Wrote sermon. Mr. H. made two baskets for me.

Bluehill - August 1797

1.-5. Bored pump larger. Mr. H. hoed my potatoes. Rec'd a visit. Had 1 3/4 bushels rye cleaned up. Wrote sermon.

6. Preached at B. Mrs. Ellen Wood propounded for church membership.

7.-12. Finished boring and reaming pump larger. Mr. Spofford ? these. Bored and reamed one for him. Went to mill. Wrote sermon.

14.-19. Made a tap turner and joined it to part of my pump, the whole length of which is 40 1/2 ft. Made pump rigging and my pump raised. Rec'd and made a visit. Wrote sermon.

20. Preached at B. Mrs. M ? and Mrs. Esther 0sgood propounded. On the 14th rec'd news of the death of my sister Rebecca.

21.-26. Worked on pump rigging and on my house. Rec'd and made a visit. Mr. H. worked with me on baskets. Wrote sermons about future life after the death of my sister.

Bluehill - October 1797

2.- 7. Worked on my house. Rec'd company from Y (?) river. Married Jack Ingals and Nat. Horton. Assisted in raising Mr. D's house. Bored log for sink and ran the augur through it. Wrote sermons.

9.-14. Worked at boring sink logs, planing boards, etc. wrote 3 sermons, preached a lecture.Visited D. Osgood's son, sick with slow fever.

16.-21. Fitted logs to convey water from my sink. Worked on sink and on ceiling in kitchen.Rec'd a visit. Wrote sermon. Caught a rabbit.

22. Preached Bluehill.

23.-28. Finished sink and part of pump for my well. With assistance of N. Holt and son dug 15 bushels of potatoes. Mr. Candage planed floor boards for me gratis. Wrote a sermon.

29. Preached Bluehill.

30.-31. Fitted and primed window sashes. With help from Mr. Johnson dug 24 bushels potatoes.

Bluehill - November 1797

1. Began to set glass.

2. Moved into my house.

3.- 4. Set furniture in order, secured boards. Mr. Bridges worked for me.

5. Preached Bluehill. Finished 1st chapter Pascal.

6.-11. Dug potatoes, fitted glass, banked house. Mr. Merrill came to attend association and preached from Isaiah 54:17 - a good sermon. Went to Mt. Desert with Capt. W. and E.D. Preached a lecture.

11.-12 Preached at Mt. Desert. Received $4.50, returned home.

14.-18. Set glass, finished digging potatoes. Laid kitchen hearth. Finished banking house. Made visits, wrote sermon. Rec 'd company.

19. Preached Bluehill. Read a sermon to the ? by William Kopun (?).

20.-25. Put up work bench. Engaged before rec'd 50 lb. pork and a pig. Worked on my house. Laid out five acres of land to be cleared. Helped pump out my well. Wrote sermon. Preached a lecture, attended church meeting.

27.-29. Fixed watering trough, cut wood at the door, went to mill. Wrote Thanksgiving sermon.

Bluehill - December 1797

1.- 2. Read newspaper. Wrote letter and sermon.

3. Preached Bluehill. Cut wood, worked on house. Made 3 visits with Mrs. F. Bought side of pork and salted it down. Bought 4 sheep. Wrote confession for Mr. K ng (?) and sermon.

4.-10. Preached Bluehill. Translated from Pascal.

 

11.-16. Worked on house. Made grain place and carried in part of my rye. With school committee gave certificates to 3 persons for keeping school. Read a paper and wrote sermon.

18.-23. Carried in remainder of rye. Set up stanchion in my barn. Substituted for singing school $2.00. Went to Newberry Neck and married Jon Man to Mrs. G. Wrote sermon.

25.-30. Worked on my house. Set barn in order. Rec'd company. Married J. Darling, Jr. Gave Mr. D. Spofford a note for $22. for work on my house. Went on errands. Wrote sermon.
