In the autumn of 1793 while still at Harvard Fisher began to use a "philisophical alphabet", or shorthand in which he would keep his lecture notes and use in the future to write his sermons. Although the immediate excuse for such a project was that it would "save him costly paper", one cannot help but believe that it was done primarily for his intellectual pleasure. He also used a kind of phonetic spelling of his own devising to keep his expense accounts.
